Yoga for people who cannot touch their toes

A small room, ten mats, blocks and blankets for everyone, and a teacher who will never ask you to stand on your hands. Most of our class started stiff. Some still are.

Mondays

18:30 and 19:45 · 60 min

Stiff start

The class for week one, and for anyone who likes week one. Everything on the floor or holding a wall, everything slow, and every pose shown three ways: the easy one, the middle one and the one you might reach by summer.

  • For complete beginners
  • Blocks and straps on every mat
  • Ten places, booked ahead

Wednesdays

07:00 and 12:30 · 45 min

Desk back

Shoulders, hips and the lower back, which is where eight hours of sitting ends up. Short enough for a lunch hour, with ten minutes on the foam roller at the end that people come back for.

  • After a few Mondays, or straight in
  • Foam rollers provided
  • Come in work clothes, change in two minutes

Saturdays

09:00 · 75 min

Sit still

Half an hour of gentle movement, then half an hour of sitting on a cushion doing nothing at all, which is harder. Chairs for anyone whose knees disagree. Tea afterwards, no talking required.

  • For anyone who has been twice
  • Cushions, chairs and blankets
  • Phones stay in the hall

What your body will say, week by week

Week one

Everything is tight and you will notice muscles you did not know you had, mostly the next morning. This is normal and it is not a sign you are bad at it.

Week three

The worst week. The novelty has gone and the change has not arrived. This is when most people stop; it is exactly the week to keep coming.

Week six

Socks go on standing up. You look over your shoulder when reversing without turning your whole body. Nobody else notices, and you do.

What to wear
Anything you can sit cross-legged in. No special clothes, no shoes on the floor, socks are fine.
Injuries and operations
Tell the teacher before class, not during. We will show you what to skip and what to do instead.
Pregnancy
Not in the first three months, and after that ask us first. We will send you to a specialist class if it suits you better.
Arriving late
Doors close five minutes after the start, because the first ten minutes are the safest part.
Cancelling
Up to six hours before and the class goes back on your card. After that someone on the waiting list gets your mat.
