Stallbook For market traders

Why we made it

We built Stallbook for the twenty minutes after the market, when the van is packed and nobody wants to do the sums.

Most till apps are made for shops with a counter, wifi and a back office. A stall has a folding table, a phone signal that comes and goes, and a cash tin.

Stallbook works offline, syncs when it can and treats cash, card and stock as one day. £9 a month, no card fees on top of the card reader's own.

How it works

  1. 01A hand holding a card up to a black payment terminal on an orange background.

    Take payments

Pair any card reader, or take contactless on the phone itself. Cash goes in with one tap and a running total.

  2. 02Punnets of red and orange cherry tomatoes on a market stall with a handwritten price sign.

    Count stock

Load the van into the app in the morning. It counts down as you sell and tells you at noon what will run out.

  3. 03A laptop, a tablet and a phone showing charts and tables on a marble table.

    See the day

Takings, best sellers, busiest hour and the weather that day, side by side with last week and last year.

  4. 04A wooden desk with drawings, pens and a laptop, seen from above.

    Close the year

Pitch fees, fuel and stock costs are already in. Send your accountant one file, or do the self-assessment from it.

Used every week at

Farmers' markets, food halls, craft fairs and Christmas markets across the country. If you have a pitch, it works there.

All notes

Empty market tables and benches under strings of lights in a covered hall. Traders and shoppers among green vegetable stalls under a high market roof.

Before your first market day

  1. Add your stock the night before. A photo and a price is enough; it takes about ten minutes.
  2. Pair your card reader at home, on wifi, not at the pitch with one bar of signal.
  3. Count your float into the app before the first customer, so the cash adds up at the end.
  4. Leave it running. Stallbook keeps working offline and catches up on the drive home.
