Six dogs · one van · the same two fields

Six dogs, twice a day, and I have met all of them at home first

One van, one person, the same two fields on the same route at the same time. Dogs are fine with almost anything if it happens in the same order every day, and this round has happened in the same order since 2019.

What it costs

The round

Two walks a day, six dogs each, never seven. Collected from the door, walked for an hour and ten minutes off lead in a fenced field, dried off in the van and put back exactly where I found them.

You get two photographs and one line about how it went, every walk, before I have left your road.

Prices

Per dog, per walk. Two dogs from the same house are charged as one and a half, because it is one collection and one door.

One walk

An hour and ten off lead, collected and returned. Booked the day before by text, and free to cancel until eight in the morning.

£16

A park bench under a tree with a city skyline behind it.

Three a week

The usual arrangement. Same three days, same walk, same six dogs, which is worth more to a nervous dog than anything else on this page.

£42 a week

A field of tall golden grass in evening light.

Every weekday

Five walks, one invoice at the end of the month, and a key safe by your door that only I have the code to.

£66 a week

Long grass in a field, lit low and warm.

Six rules

Every walker has these and almost none of them write them down. Mine decide whether a dog can be in a van with five others, and they are not negotiable, including for very nice dogs.

1

I meet you at home first

Half an hour, free, with your dog in its own hallway. About one dog in ten is not right for a group van and it is much kinder to find that out there.

2

Neutered over twelve months

Not a moral position, a van position. Six dogs in a confined space is a different thing entirely with an entire adult male in it.

3

Recall, or a long line

No judgement either way — plenty of the six are on a thirty-metre line and have a brilliant time. I just need to know which yours is.

4

Vaccinated, and I see the card

Kennel cough included. One case goes through six households in four days and I have watched it happen to somebody else's round.

5

No food in the van

Not treats, not yours, not mine. It is the single most reliable way to start a fight between two dogs that like each other.

6

I will tell you the bad things

If your dog limped, growled, ate something or had a bad afternoon, that is in the message too. The photographs are the nice half of the job.

Insured, DBS checked, canine first aid renewed every two years, and all three certificates are on the van window where you can read them.

One person, and that is the whole business

I was a groomer for nine years and a vet nurse for two before that. I started walking in 2019 with two dogs and a hatchback. There are now six, a proper van with six crates and a fan, and a waiting list of four.

When I am ill nobody covers, and you get a text at seven and no charge. Nobody else drives this van.
