Lattice Open 11 — sold out
A lattice-topped pie cooling on a rack.

Six kinds a day, and when they are gone we shut

Open at eleven. Most days the last one goes between two and half past three, and on a Saturday it is closer to one.

What is in today

What is in today

A golden pie, straight from the oven.

Beef and stout

Out at 11:00 · usually gone by 13:30

The one we make most of and the one that runs out first. Thirty a day, no more, because that is what the ovens hold.

A pastry with a dark filling on a board.

Leek and cheese

Out at 11:00 · usually gone by 15:00

The vegetarian one, and not an afterthought — it has been on the board since the first week and it outsells two of the meat ones.

A sweet pastry with syrup, on a dark surface.

Whatever the fruit is

Out at 12:30 · twelve only

Apple from September, rhubarb in spring, and nothing at all for three weeks in August when neither is any good.

Loaves and pastry cooling on a tray.

The pastry is made the day before

Rolled, folded, rested overnight, rolled again at six. It is the reason we cannot simply make more when the queue is long, and the reason the bottom is never soggy.

Why we do not take orders after nine
Small desserts arranged in glasses.

There is no seating and there never will be

Eleven square metres, a counter and a door. Everything goes out in a bag with a piece of card under it so you can eat it on the wall opposite, which most people do.

The six, and what they cost

Beef and stout£5.40

Chicken and leek£5.20

Leek and cheese£4.80

Pork and apple£5.40

Fish, Fridays only£6.20

Whatever the fruit is£4.20

Card or cash at the counter. Two for £9.50 on any of the savoury six, which is the only offer we have ever run and it is not going away.

Pastry and fruit stacked on a plate. A filled roll on a wooden board. Two small cakes on a pale surface. A plate of food on a dark table.

Before you come

Selling out
It happens every day and it is not a marketing trick — it is thirty, thirty, twenty and twelve, and then there is nothing left to sell.
Ordering ahead
By phone before nine in the morning, up to six pies, held until one. After nine the tins are already filled and the answer has to be no.
Large orders
From twelve, three days' notice, weekdays only. We will not do a Saturday, however far you are driving.
Allergies
Wheat and butter in everything, on the same bench. The leek and cheese is vegetarian; nothing here is vegan and nothing is gluten free.
Reheating
Oven, fifteen minutes, one-eighty. Not a microwave — you paid for the pastry and a microwave will undo all of it.
Closed
Sundays and Mondays, and the last two weeks of August. It says so on the door and people still knock.
