Eight tents · two nights · one guide

Two nights at the edge of the dunes, and one of them with the generator off

Erg is a camp of eight tents where the tarmac ends. You arrive in the afternoon, walk into the dunes with a guide the next day, and sleep the last night under the clearest sky you are likely to see.

The camp

Eight tents, a long table and a fire

Each tent has a proper bed, a rug on the sand and a lamp. There are two shower blocks with hot water from the sun, most of the time.

The table

Everyone eats together at one long table at seven, whatever the menu. Tell us what you don't eat when you book and it will not appear.

The quiet

No music after nine. No generator on the second night. The only light is the fire, the lamps in the tents and the sky.

A small tent glowing from inside at night below a dark rocky ridge, a person sitting in its doorway.

Forty-eight hours

Day one

15:00

Meet at the end of the road. Bags into the truck, you into the other truck.

17:30

Up the big dune behind camp for the sunset. Tea when you come down.

19:00

The long table. Then the fire, for as long as you like.

Day two

06:30

Out on foot before the heat, five hours with the guide, lunch in the shade of a rock.

15:00

Nothing at all. Sleep, read, sit.

21:00

Generator off. The guide names what can be named in the sky.

Day three

08:00

Breakfast, then back to the end of the road by eleven.

From dusk to dark

A row of tents on flat sand under a pink and blue twilight sky, a curtained canopy in front.

Seven o'clock: the light goes pink.

Two small white tents and a fire among dunes and low trees at dusk.

The fire is lit before anyone asks.

Peaked canvas tents in a row on red sand below rocky hills.

Your tent, a lamp inside, the flap tied back.

A breakfast plate of eggs, olives, cheese, sausage, vegetables and brown bread.

And in the morning, a large breakfast.

What's included
Both nights, every meal, the trucks from the road, the guided walk and the tea. Not included: getting to the end of the road.
Fitness
The walk is five hours on soft sand, which is harder than it sounds. If you'd rather, stay in camp; nobody minds.
Summer
We close from May to September. It is too hot to walk and too hot to sleep, and we'd rather tell you than take your money.
Cancelling
Full refund up to thirty days before. Sandstorms happen; if we cancel for weather, you choose another date or a refund.
