Breakages

The whole of it, on the front page, because this is the only part of a hire agreement anybody ever reads twice.

You pay the replacement, not a penalty
A broken wine glass is £1.90, which is what it costs us to buy another one. There is no multiplier and there never has been.
Five per cent is free
On any order over two hundred pieces, the first five per cent of breakages is written off. At a wedding, that is about right.
We count, you check
The crate list goes out with the van and comes back with the driver. If you disagree with the count, say so on the Monday and we will recount in front of you.
Chips are not breakages
Glass with a chipped rim is ours to deal with and we bin it. You are not charged for a glass somebody put in a dishwasher badly at our end.
The old cupboard is different
Crystal and 1930s coloured glass carry a stated replacement price on the crate, because we cannot just buy another one. It is on the quote, before you book.
No deposit
We have never taken one in nineteen years. We invoice afterwards and about one customer in three hundred does not pay, which is cheaper than the paperwork.

Everything comes back dirty. Do not wash it, do not rinse it, do not stack it wet — a washed-and-stacked crate of wine glasses is how most of the damage happens.

Delivery

Two vans, both with tail lifts, both driven by somebody who has carried a crate up a spiral staircase and will tell you whether yours is possible before you book the venue.

The washroom

Two machines running from seven on a Monday morning, a rinse tank that is changed four times a day, and two people whose whole job is looking at glass against a light box before it goes back in a crate.

It is the least glamorous room in the business and it is the reason anybody hires from us twice.
